A few weeks ago when The Utah Valley Chamber / Women's Business Network invited me to be part of the WBN Advisory Board I graciously accepted.
I was one of the original members of the WBN in the early 2000's when my career was just getting started. (Yes, a very long time ago, pphhhtttt who's counting?!)
This event was a networking panel where we each shared our top three tips on the importance of networking and building relationships no matter what stage your business is in.
I would love to share my three tips with you.
Did you know that you are a DYNAMIC CHOICE MAKER in your life and the way you show up in the world. We all have agency of choice in our time, our efforts and our energy that we put out to the world and those we interact with.
BE SEEN. Be seen online and in person. If the average adult needs to see your offer 7-12 times before they decide to buy from you, then you MUST be visible. Let people know what you do and who you do it for! Never stop talking about it and sharing how you help others with the product or service you offer.
ATTEND. Invest in relationship building. Trust that you offer a value in the work that you do and the light you bring to a space. Get to know other decision-makers. There are MANY different types of networking events and groups to participate in. Be diligent in the time spent the respective groups and consistent in attendance so they get to know you.
SERVE. Serve in all the ways you can; generous with your charity, your wisdom, your experience, your connections, your desire to serve others. LISTEN to serve, authentically and genuinely.
How you make someone feel is as important as what you do. YOU are the brand, as much as your logo or service/product. People do business with those they know, they like and they trust. Doing what you say will do is critical so it's important you become known as a person of value and character. As you navigate relationships with clients and colleagues be intentional about setting clear expectations on what they can expect from you as you work together. That is a great way to build trust and respect from your clients and other decision-makers. That type of consistent behavior will invite people to say “I've heard great things about you." Doesn't that sound fun? What an inviting way to start a conversation with a new connection?! STAND OUT and make it count!
