What is the value of your YES?

I was recently hired to speak at a local company with a quick paced and rapidly growly sales team. The topic requested was “what is a main key to success in sales and building relationships."

Here is what I shared, condensed version.

The Power of Integrity: Why Doing What You Say You'll Do Matters

In a world filled with promises, commitments, and aspirations, the value of integrity stands as a beacon of reliability and trustworthiness. At the heart of integrity lies a simple yet profound principle: doing what you say you'll do. This principle transcends personal and professional spheres, shaping not only individual character, it also shapes the foundation of relationships and communities.

When you make a promise or commitment, whether to yourself or others, you create an expectation—a contract of trust. Fulfilling that promise is not merely an act of accountability yet a demonstration of respect and reliability. It communicates to others that your word holds weight, that you can be counted on to follow through on your commitments. Consistently honoring your word builds credibility and establishes you as a person of integrity… “the word gets out!”

Imagine a world where everyone honored their commitments—a world where trust is abundant, and integrity is the norm. In such a world, businesses thrive on strong partnerships, communities flourish through cooperation, and society progresses through collective accountability. It starts with YOU!

The reality is that we're all human, and there are times when circumstances may prevent us from fulfilling our promises. Rest assured, mistakes and setbacks WILL HAPPEN.  In such instances, honesty and communication are key. Let the client know up front there has been a change in delivery. Do not wait, no matter how heavy it feels. Acknowledging our limitations, expressing sincere apologies, and taking proactive steps to make amends demonstrate integrity even in the face of challenges.

Mistakes will happen, it's how we handle the next steps that demonstrate the power of your integrity. It speaks volumes and builds integrity when it is louder than the setback.

The importance of doing what you say you'll do cannot be overstated. It forms the foundation of trust, strengthens relationships, and cultivates a culture of integrity. By consistently honoring your word, you not only enhance your own reputation you more importantly contribute to a world where honesty, reliability, and accountability prevail. Aligning your actions with your words, and building a life of meaning and purpose.

My final thoughts were around the foundation of doing what you say you'll do, is KNOWING what your YES is worth. This can only be demonstrated when we say NO. Our yes loses its' value if we give it away without caution to delivering with integrity.

I see this being the black hole in the expectations of how we show up when building a business, servicing others and our overall contribution to the culture around you. If you are occasionally falling short in your work and your service to others? It may be because YOU ARE OVER COMMITTING. We've all done it. We aim to please. Keep the client happy. Close the deal. We are the movers and shakers; making it happen! PAUSE and reflect. When you over commit, you find yourself overwhelmed, running ragged and dropping balls left and right. When you are actively working this way things don't get done timely or professionally. You lose trust and confidence in those you serve. The power of your YES loses its magic and heart when we never say NO.

If it's not a hell yes, should it a hell no?

If it's a maybe, could it be a “let me get back to you?"

What is the value of your YES?

Saying yes to life holds the power to creation and contentment and lasting abundance… if we can only learn to say yes to the right things.
