Suicide Prevention: My personal journey.
This September, I want to take a moment to acknowledge Suicide Prevention Month—a time that holds deep meaning for me personally.
In 2017, my world shifted when my daughter attempted suicide. It was one of the most heartbreaking and challenging moments of my life. As a mother, I felt helpless, scared, and overwhelmed, caught between love, fear, and a desperation to protect her. Through this LONG journey, I learned that conversations about mental health and suicide can be hard, but they are necessary. Silence can be deadly, but hope and support can be life-changing.
Her attempt came after years of therapy, conversation and deep support. I thought she had reached a calm place in her weary heart. As a family, we had taken a much-needed DEEP SIGH on a journey that began in 2008. What I know for sure? The inner work is not linear, and life experiences continue to teach me and guide me on my search for harmony and peace in my heart.
As a parent, we often take on our children's heartache. This path did not serve me - or her. I was holding on too tight. Once I released my tight grip on fear, trusted that God loved her more than I ever could and surrendered to gratitude; things began to shift.
For those of you walking a similar path—whether you're supporting a child who is struggling with suicidal thoughts or dealing with the weight of anxiety and worry—please know that you're not alone. One of the most powerful tools I found on my journey was gratitude.
Gratitude has the ability to shift our perspective, to ground us in moments of darkness, and open a doorway to healing. It doesn't erase the pain or struggle, yet it creates space for hope, even in the smallest of things.
