Happiness and sadness are not mutually exclusive.
I really love family traditions that accompany holidays or any-old-kind-of-day that gets all my people together to celebrate the day at hand or each other! This weekend, we celebrated Easter with our family and I am currently in a bit of a sad chapter with my oldest daughter. So it got me thinking…
Have YOU ever experienced a moment where happiness and sadness seem to coexist within you, dancing in a delicate balance like when the sun is out and somehow it's raining; both embracing the sky at the same time? It's a peculiar sensation, one that often leaves us grappling with conflicting emotions, unsure of how to navigate the intricacies of our feelings.
Imagine this: You have nearly thirty people surrounding you on a beautiful Sunday that fills your heart with elation and pride. Yet, amidst the jubilation, there's a whisper of melancholy. Perhaps it's the realization that someone you love dearly isn't there. You pray that it's only temporary YET you can't be sure. You try not to do the dreadful “storytelling” thing in your mind where all the juicy drama comes up. Your emotions teeter on feeling so much love and joy fill your heart with the people in the room, and moments later feel a void that someone you love isn't there.
In moments like these, the human experience reveals its complexity. We are not defined by singular emotions but rather by the mosaic of feelings that shape our perceptions and interactions with the world. The intertwining of happiness and sadness reminds us of the richness of life, where joy and sorrow walk hand in hand, each lending depth to the other.
Consider the beauty of a sunset—a spectacle that evokes both awe and wistfulness as the day transitions to night. It's in these transient moments of transition that we find ourselves suspended between emotions, caught in the tender embrace of two seemingly opposing forces.
Reflecting on such experiences, we come to understand that happiness and sadness are not mutually exclusive but rather intertwined threads in our existence. They coexist, each enhancing the other's intensity and significance. Just as music weaves together contrasting notes to create harmonious melodies, so too do our emotions blend to form the intricate soundtrack of our lives aka “our greatest hits” and why is it that we know every single word to the song we never really liked to begin with?
So, dear friends, I encourage you to embrace the complexity of your emotions. Celebrate the moments of joy with gratitude, knowing that they are made more poignant by the shadows of sadness that linger nearby. And in times of sorrow, find solace in the knowledge that happiness awaits (or is already right in front of you), ready to illuminate the path forward. Both have a place in the human experience, this is where we heal, when we EMBRACE each and every emotion. They all tell a story of living a full life, and present an opportunity to grow and learn through the chapter at hand. Here I am, once again learning much about patience and empathy as I navigate these complex and conflicting emotions that fill my heart. This too shall pass and with a deep surrender to what is here now, I pray it will deliver us to a gift that bridges us to a newfound perspective and deeper understanding of both love and pain.
May we continue to navigate the ever-shifting landscape of our emotions with grace and understanding, embracing the beauty of feeling happy and sad at the exact same time.
