Do you Champion Yourself to Greatness?

There seems to be a them with my clients, many are struggling to stay focused and on task? Maybe you're feeling it too? (Don't worry I wont tell, it happens to the best of us, I assure you.)

Staying on task when you're not feeling motivated can be challenging, yet there are several strategies you can try to boost your focus and productivity.

It's important to note that if it's procrastination that is showing up for you repeatedly, then knowing that it is a complex behavior influenced by a combination of psychological, emotional, and cognitive factors can help you navigate to a better outcome for yourself and your personal and business goals. Awareness is step one, so you're probably winning already.

Here are a few strategies that work for me to overcome procrastination that involve improving time management, setting clear goals, breaking tasks into smaller steps, finding ways to make tasks more engaging or rewarding, and practicing self-awareness to recognize and manage the emotional and cognitive triggers that lead to procrastination.

Here are some tips:

Break it down:

  • Divide your task into smaller, more manageable parts. This can make the overall task seem less daunting and help you focus on one step at a time.

Set specific goals:

  • Clarity! Clearly define what you want to accomplish. Setting specific, achievable goals gives you a sense of direction and purpose.

Create a schedule:

  • Set a realistic schedule for yourself. Knowing when and for how long you'll be working on a task can make it easier to stay on track.

Use a timer:

  • Try the google egg timer or a similar time-management method. Set a timer for a specific period (ie: 25 minutes) to work on the task, then take a short break. Repeat this cycle.

Change your environment:

  • Sometimes a change of scenery can help break the monotony. If possible, move to a different workspace to refresh your mind.

Find your peak productivity times:

  • Pay attention to your energy levels and identify when you are most productive during the day. Schedule your most important tasks during these times.

Remove distractions:

  • Identify and eliminate distractions in your environment. This may include turning off notifications, putting your phone on silent, or using website blockers.

Visualize the end result:

  • Imagine the satisfaction and sense of accomplishment you'll feel once the task is completed. Visualizing success can motivate you to push through the challenges.

Reward yourself:

  • Establish a system of rewards for completing specific milestones. Treat yourself to a break, an event, or an enjoyable activity as a reward for staying focused. This is especially important if you are your own boss or work from home and have no one to answer to.

Seek accountability:

  • If you don't work with a partner or colleague. Share your goals with a friend, family member who can provide support and hold you accountable. Knowing that someone else is aware of your tasks can be motivating.

Focus on the process, not just the outcome:

  • Instead of getting overwhelmed by the end goal, concentrate on the steps you need to take to get there. Celebrate small victories along the way.

Consider the consequences of not completing the task:

  • Reflect on the negative consequences of procrastination. Understanding the impact of not completing the task may provide the motivation you need.

Remember that motivation often follows action, so sometimes taking a small step forward can lead to increased motivation.

Experiment with different strategies to find what works best for you. Lean on your strengths and champion yourself to greatness.
